Payment of HSPA Accounts

We prefer all fees to be paid via internet banking.  You will receive an email regarding this once term has begun and you have settled into your class. Please note; it may take several days for Doreen to process the payment so that it is visible on your portal.  Never fear, your payment has not vanished!

Our statements will list all charges and all payments made.  Please be sure to open the attachment we send when we send out statements, if you have paid, this will be shown in your statement.  We send these to everyone each term so that you can see the various fees you have been charged as well as payments you have made.

Please note – Our system adds GST(Sales Tax) as a separate item, thus you will see your term fees listed and then directly under them the GST component for that same fee.  If you receive a discount, the discount also has a GST component.  It’s a bit confusing but that is just how this American platform works.  It’s not perfect, but it’s pretty jolly good.

You will notice that there are discounts for multiple classes.  These are applied to your account ledger as you book:

Double Deal – 10% discount for two classes.

Triple Threat – 15% discount for three classes.

We are always happy to talk you through your account and answer any questions you have so don’t hesitate to call or email with any concerns.

Theatresports Play Off.

The Theatresports Play Off is our annual competition for all of the Intermediate and Senior Drama students and will be held on Wednesday the 10th of April at 7pm.  This will be an entertaining evening watching our Intermediate and Senior students compete in teams of four, to take out the trophies for best team and best performer.  There will also be performances from our Singing and Dance departments.  Watch out for your invite in March!

Major Productions for 2018

Aladdin & the Arabian Nights - Intermediate/Senior Show

Written & Directed by Paul Johnson

This show will run during the Winter School Holidays, July 10th – 13th in the Rangiora Town Hall.  It will be part of Kidsfest.

Auditions for the show will be held Fri & Sat April 5th & 6th and will be open to all current students from Intermediate & Senior classes.

The show is Paul’s adaption of the Arabian Nights stories with the usual HSPA combo of modern music, colour and fun.

??????? - Junior Show

This show will be presented at the very end of Term Three with two performances on Saturday 28th September.  In the Rangiora Town Hall.

There will be auditions for this in Term Two for all New Entrant, Junior & Upper Junior Students.

We are still confirming our show choice.  We wish to do Charlie & the Chocolate factory (Hence a picture of chocolate) but have been advised that an overseas professional tour has placed a blanket hold on all performance rights for that show so we may be back to the drawing board!  Watch this space!  Whatever we do, it will be just as delicious as this picture of chocolate!

Scholarship Winners

Well done to: Joshua Lees who was the 2018 recipient of the school’s full year ‘Brandts Giesen, McCormick Lawyers’ Major Scholarship.  Joshua has performed extremely well in class, exams (Receiving Distinction in his Trinity Exam) and on stage this year at HSPA.  Representing the school admirably in local forums and generally providing an excellent role model for the younger students.  His hard work and improvement have earned him this prestigious award.

Hannah Burns who received the Intermediate NCMS Term scholarship.  Hannah excels in Drama, Singing & Dance at HSPA, having received Champion Studio Dancer award for Contemporary and taken leading roles in previous years productions.   Hannah has worked with our IHC performers this year in performance along with much older dancers, holding her own in this group. Well Done Hannah!

Niah Laing for winning the Junior HSPA Term scholarship.  Niah continues to impress us with her mature conduct and confident performing, despite her young age.  This year she was quick to pickup the opportunity to lead the younger performers in production. Niah works hard and has achieved excellent results in dance, receiving not one, but two Champion Studio Dancer awards in 2018.

New Staff Members

After sad goodbyes last year, to some loved staff members, as a result we have heaps of new/returning tutors this year!

Here they all are:

New Tutors to HSPA

Maeve Burns – Tap Tutor (Wednesdays)

BAL Elementary

Maeve's passion for dance began at a young age, so music and acting naturally followed soon after.  She studied Tap, Jazz and Musical Theatre at Impact Dance and Stage School and then continued on, dancing and performing in musicals throughout high school. She holds her Elementary Tap Exam with Honours with Distinction from Ballet Australian Limited.

Her performance credits include Guys and DollsShowstoppers: An Arts Month Cabaret (MUSOC); Urinetown and Cabaret (St Andrews College), and she most recently produced the South Island premiere of Heathers: The Musical (MUSOC). She is currently rehearsing for her debut performance with Showbiz Christchurch in We Will Rock You.

Maeve has also attended the Christchurch International Musical Theatre Summer School (CIMTSS) since 2014 and is entering her second year studying towards a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Sociology at the University of Canterbury in 2019.

Caitlin Constable – Jazz Tutor (Mondays)

Caitlin began training in classical ballet from the age of 5, and over her 12 years of dancing she has gone on to study jazz, modern, lyrical and contemporary styles of dance. She has her NZMDA and IDTA dance qualifications. Over these years she has being singing in her bedroom, thus discovered her love for musical theatre and began studying drama at HSPA. This year she will be studying towards her Trinity College Diploma in Musical Theatre with HSPA.

Caitlin has been performing in Rangiora High School shows, North Canterbury Musicals' Jekyll and Hyde and helping out with ballet classes at JMSD.  Caitlin has learnt a lot about choreography and theatre and can't wait to share her passion with other dancers!

Kelly Fletcher-Jones – Drama Tutor Tuesdays

ATCL Performance Speech & Drama

Grad DipTchLn (Primary) Canterbury University

Kelly’s passion for performing arts began when she was in school, performing in Musical Theatre shows for the NCMS, taking singing and drama options at school, where she met Dale. Kelly has performed professionally as a singer for much of her life, beginning at high school, continuing whilst she travelled in the UK and most recently, in North Canterbury, as part of successful duo The Lost Circus and as a sought after soloist.  Kelly will be remembered for her compelling leading role of Mrs Johnstone in the NCMS production of Blood Brothers in 2012.

After gaining her ATCL diploma here at HSPA, Kelly initially ran Performing Arts classes up in Cheviot for two years and has been bringing drama to the classroom in her job as a fully qualified teacher at Pegasus Primary since then.  Having decided it was time to involve herself in more theatrical pursuits outside of her classroom, it was an easy yes, when Dale approached her to take some drama classes at HSPA.

Kelly lives in Waikuku and has three theatrical daughters.

Returning Tutors to HSPA

Rebekah Au – Drama Tutor (Thursdays)

ATCL (Teaching) Speech and Drama Trinity College

BSc, BA (Hons), Grad DipTchLn (Primary) Canterbury University

Rebekah first became involved in HSPA in 1998 as a Speech and Drama student and was part of the very first show- Storybook Songs. During her years as a student she developed a love of performing and the confidence to share her skills with others. She completed her ATCL Teacher’s Diploma in 2006 and has taught as a Speech and Drama tutor for 7 years. Through HSPA she was given the opportunity to have creative roles in several major productions, including Assistant Director, Writer, Director and Lighting Operator.

Rebekah is also a trained Teacher and has spent five years teaching Year 7-10s a range of subjects, including Drama, within a school setting. She was responsible for training Theatre Sports teams for the Theatre Sports in Schools competition and was involved in the major production.

Rebekah enjoys helping students to develop as performers and is excited to be back at HSPA in 2019.

Leanne O’Mahony – Senior Glee Tutor (Tuesdays)

BA Mus., Dip Teaching (Secondary).

Leanne trained as a classical singer but has been focused more on musical theatre and choral singing in recent years. She is a secondary school teacher and her Degree in Music is from the University of Canterbury. Leanne enjoys helping others improve their technique and the teamwork involved in creating group numbers together.

Leanne’s experience spans more than 20 years of Musical Direction and Vocal Coach work, not to mention extensive experience both in, and running top-end choirs and vocal groups through Burnside High school and other institutions.

It would be difficult to find someone in North Canterbury with more knowledge and experience in this field, than Leanne O’Mahony.

Junior Tutors:

Bex Hughes, Josh Lees & Kyla Forbes-Keen

All final year Diploma students at HSPA, these three tutors will be working in pairs tutoring the Junior students here at HSPA.  They are looking forward to making that step in their theatre journey and being able to share their joy of drama with the younger students.  Those student sin their classes get two teachers instead of one – lucky them!

It’s always exciting to be able to offer such excellent experienced tutors as well as bring some wonderful new role models to our children.  We hope you enjoy getting to know these lovely folks along with all of our existing staff!
